Why You’ll Want to Try Yoga Today

Have you thought about trying yoga, but have been unsure if it’s for you? Yoga is the perfect exercise solution for just about anyone, at any age or ability. Read on to find out why you should get yourself to a yoga class (or try a yoga DVD) today.

Yoga is flexible. You can choose specific yoga poses to ease a beginner into exercise or challenge an advanced athlete. Every yoga pose can be done at the appropriate level of challenge. If this is your first yoga class, you’ll want to stick to the easiest phases of each pose, but if you are in good shape, you can follow the advancement of the poses until you feel adequately challenged.

Yoga provides tremendous stress relief. Yoga routines tap into a powerful mind-body connection that can even lower blood pressure and leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed.

Yoga improves muscle strength. Yoga makes use of your body weight to tone and strengthen muscles. If you aren’t sore after a yoga session, you simply need to step it up to a more difficult yoga class.

Yoga is good for your heart and lungs. While yoga routines are not aerobic in nature, they do tax your heart and lungs. Take the time to learn the pranayama (deep breathing exercises) and you’ll improve your lung strength even more.

Yoga increases flexibility. The more flexible you are, the better your balance will be. As you get older, you need to spend more time building flexibility and balance.

Yoga can be tackled at any age. It’s easy to learn, adaptable, and provides different solutions for different age-related needs.

Try a yoga class today, and see if you don’t leave feeling serene, positive, and like you just did something fantastic for your body.

How To Conquer Sleep Problems Without Taking Anything

Anyone who has ever had regular sleeping problems knows that these problems can absolutely ruin the days that follow bad nights of sleep. And even though plenty of sleep aids are available that work fine, many people find that they feel groggy the day after taking such sleep aids. If you have tried measures ranging from sleeping pills to melatonin to valerian root and have still had problems sleeping or have been groggy the next day, pay attention!

The most biggest thing that will help you fall asleep if you have been experiencing problems sleeping is relaxation in your body and mind. Conversely, when it comes to getting poor sleep, one of the biggest things that will contribute is stress and tension in your body and mind. This means that the best way to ease into sleep when you have been experiencing problems is to find what works to make you more relaxed.

One thing that can be a huge benefit when you are trying to relax your body is heat, and a shower is a great way to get heat on your body. You will relax your body before you go to bed if you take a shower at night, so consider switching to night if you usually take a shower in the morning.

Tea is another way to relax your body using heat – but make sure you drink tea that is caffeine free, lest you worsen the problem.

Stretching before you go to bed is another method many people have found helps them unwind in their body and sleep better. This stretching can take the form of the regular sorts of stretches you typically do before a workout, or it can take the form of yoga – which helps a lot of people relax.

Meditation is another approach that is similar to yoga, as it helps you regulate your breathing while also calming your body. If meditation is not for you, find breathing exercises that help you breathe deeply and regularly, which will also help your body unravel just a bit.

When you are unable to sleep, it can certainly be frustrating; but you will be able to find a way to fall asleep more easily, without taking anything at all, if you explore these options.

Reasons to Take Vitamin D

Have you considered taking a Vitamin D supplement? Why is Vitamin D getting so much attention?

There are a myriad of positive health benefits attributed to Vitamin D. Vitamin D is responsible for calcium absoption and the production of certain “feel good” hormones, as well as is considered part of a healthy defense against some kinds of cancer and hypertension. If you are lacking Vitamin D, you may be at higher risk of developing brittle bones, cardiovascular issues, rickets, and diabetes.

Many Americans don’t get enough Vitamin D. Common theories explaining this deficiency point to our heavy use of sunscreen and the amount of time Americans spend indoors.

But how much is too much, and what are the recommended amounts of Vitamin D? The answer is somewhere between 200 IU (International Units) and 2000 IU, depending on who you talk to. You don’t want to take more than 2000 IU a day because Vitamin D can be toxic at doses higher than 2000 IU. The most popular answer right now is to take about 1000 IU a day.

What are the best ways to get Vitamin D? You can get a natural dose of Vitamin D by sunbathing. Just ten minutes of direct sunlight each day can get you your baseline (200 IU) of Vitamin D each day. Several doctors are suggesting that you try to get twenty minutes of sunlight a day, and then slather on your SPF30 after that. Other doctors say the risk of sunburn, skin cancer, and skin damage isn’t worth the benefits; these doctors suggest you find another way to get your Vitamin D.

One simple method is supplements, although you will want to watch the dosage. Many multivitamins are now delivering higher doses of Vitamin D, so check to see what your daily vitamin provides. Drink fortified beverages such as OJ and milk. You can also get Vitamin D from fish, cod liver oil, and eggs.

Ask your doctor about Vitamin D at your next visit, and see if a supplement might be a good idea.

How To Keep Healthy By Balancing Your Life

Lots of people worry about their health, and they do all sorts of things in the way of exercise and eating right in order to stay healthy. But while people do this, they often end up neglecting the balance in their life that will also bring health. And actually, keeping your life balanced is one of the big keys for keeping your body healthy, as a balanced life allows your mind and body to fulfill the things they are designed to fulfill.

Work: This is the area that many people focus their energies on, and it is certainly an important part of every person’s life. After all, “work” lends a sense of purpose to one’s everyday existence, and this is why you often see people whose health declines rapidly as soon as they retire. But even though many people do not necessarily want this to happen, work often becomes the sole focus in their lives. You should aim to get into the habit of focusing fully on work while you are at work, but leaving work behind as soon as you leave.

Rest: Rest and relaxation are the areas of balance that most people long to engage in, but which they nevertheless often push aside. The body and mind require rest in order to function properly – and not just rest when you go to sleep at night, either! Every single day, you should set aside some time during which your mind and your body can rest, relax, and enjoy the world around you.

Play: And of course, this is the area of balance that most people end up forgetting about altogether. Although it might seem like the word “play” applies only to children, playing is actually an important part of adult life as well. You should take the time to “play” every day, whether this playing takes the form of a board game, a game with your kids, or a hobby you enjoy.

You will find that each day is far more rewarding, and that your body and mind feel healthier than before, when you combine these three areas of balance – work, rest, and play.

Drinking Clean Water At Home

Continued hydration is a big part of continued health, which means that it is important for you to make sure you drink enough water every day. But many people fail to drink even close to enough water each day, and part of the reason for this lack of water is because – quite frankly – their water tastes no good. If your water does not taste satisfactory, chances are you will not convince yourself to drink one gallon (8 glasses) of water per day like you should. You can watch your health improve as your water intake increases, as soon as you follow these tips to enable yourself to have clean, tasty water to drink at home.

Of course, one of the best (and most transportable!) ways to get clean, tasty water all the time is to buy bottled water. But at the same time, bottled water – especially if you buy it by the bottle – can be quite expensive. With bottled water, you should plan to buy it in bulk, as this will allow you to always have water to take with you wherever you go while also getting a good deal on it.

Consider getting a water bubbler in your own home if you want the taste of bottled water without having to pay the price. The bottles that go with these can usually be purchased for as little as $5 or $10, and you can buy water for about $0.33 per gallon at such stores as Walmart. Additionally, you can take this water with you everywhere – just like bottled water – if you simply buy a reusable water bottle.

Of course, another option – one that can be done any number of ways – is filtering water in your own home. You can purchase a stand-alone water filter in order to filter your water at home, or you can attach a filter to your sink, or you can just make sure the filtration system in your refrigerator is working.

It does not especially matter which of these options you choose to go with yourself, so long as you choose one to go with! You will be able to actually drink as much water as your body requires once you do this, as you will have access to plenty of clean, delicious water right there in your home!

Okra is Good for You

Okra may send shivers down some peoples spine while other peoples mouths begin to water. People either love it, or hate it and there doesn’t seem to be much middle ground on this. Okra is a common staple in the southern parts of the United States. It is a shame that Okra isn’t as popular in other parts of the United States. You can usually find okra in your local market in the froze food section.

Okra is very healthy for you for a number of reasons. One benefit of eating okra is that it can be used as a demulcent. A demulcint is a compound that can coat and south pain and inflammation in mucus membranes. The demulcint in okra is mucilage. Herbalists believe that this can assist people who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome or suffer from irregularity with their intestines.

Another reason to consider adding okra to your diet is it is low in calories but high in nutrients. Foods that are high in fiber and low in calories are filling and great for people who are trying to loose weight. High fiber is also very good for your digestive tract in general. Okra is also high in the important vitamins B,A, and C. This is a very heart healthy veggie. Okra can assist in lowering cholesterol when it is eaten regularly.

Okra is commonly used in gumbos and soups in the southern part of the U.S. Okra has the unique ability to help thicken soups with its mucilage. Some people do enjoy eating okra raw such as on salads.  This is up to personal opinion. The flavor of okra has been compared to eggplant. If you wish to reduce the slime in okra a common recommendation is to fry it. Other options include steaming or boiling.

There are a large number of different recipes you can use that include okra. Cajun cooking is a great example of a type of cooking that includes okra.

The Five Moral Restraints of Yoga

image

If you’ve begun a serious yoga practice, you’ll want to incorporate the yamas—the five moral restraints—into your daily practice. Interpret the yamas such that you can apply each of the five restraints to your life in a practical way. Consider these five restraints as you go through your asana (yoga poses), and then seek to carry these principles with you throughout the day.

The first yama is ahimsa, or refusal to participate in violence. You may practice this by being warm and kind towards your coworkers, family members, neighbors, and strangers you encounter. You might decide to hold your temper in a trying situation or perhaps you will project this attitude outward in a conscious effort to be kind towards all people.

Yama number two is the decision to honor truthfulness, called satya. This may be truthfulness with others, or it may be an issue of being true to yourself and living authentically. You might embrace this principle by speaking words of truth or by honoring your integrity and the integrity of others.

The third moral restraint is the practice of asteya, or determining not to steal from anyone or anything. You may decide this means you will have integrity with your tax returns or refuse ot take credit for a coworker’s contributions to a project. You may decide the best way to implement this yama is to only use as much as you truly need, preserving resources so others may also have enough, and thereby honoring the earth and its inhabitants.

The fourth yama is brahmacarya, or practice of moderation. You can practice this by thinking through what extremes tempt you, such as overeating, oversleeping, excessive drinking, or any other way you take too much or indulge too much. By living moderately and avoiding extremes, you will have the energy and resources to give to others.

The last yama is aparigrapha, or refusal to hoard for oneself. If you choose to give freely instead of selfishly hoarding, you will reap the benefits associated with this moral restraint.

The five moral restraints, or yamas, will lead you to enlightenment, especially if practiced in conjunction with the niyamas.

Three Simple Ways To Maintain A Healthy Lifestyle

Without a healthy lifestyle, it is unlikely that you will feel healthy, and if you do not feel healthy, you are unlikely to feel like you are living life to the fullest. Without a healthy lifestyle pushing you forward, you will likely find that you feel sluggish and unmotivated, and that your body is prone to illness. On the other hand, those who are able to keep their lifestlye healthy are much more likely to be full of energy and motivation! At the same time, however, a lot of people feel that it is difficult to consistently lead a healthy lifestyle. Quite frankly, part of the problem is that a lot of people try to do too much at once! By starting small, you can make it much easier to start leading a healthy lifestyle. Once you change the little things, you will find that the big things start to change as well.

The first thing you need to do to lead a healthy lifestyle is this: watch what goes into your body! While plenty of people understand this step and know how important it is, they do not understand exactly what they should and should not put into their bodies. For instance, while most poeple understand that smoking and drinking in excess are unhealthy, they do not know the difference between bad fat and good fat, or between bad cholesterol and good cholesterol. Take the time to study up on these smaller, more subtle areas, and your body will notice the difference.

Another big step in leading a healthy lifestyle is exercise. Lots of people have good intentions when it comes to exercise, but they fail to follow through. If your workout plan calls for you to visit the gym each day of the week, for an hour each time, you’ll probably scrap the whole thing pretty quickly! Instead of doing this, you should start small. Schedule a few days a week, for ten minutes each day. Over time, you can gradually increase the number of days and the amount of time.

Finally, you have to keep in mind the fact that sleep is important. For some, this is an easy step, but for a lot of others it can be extremely difficult! People often feel like they are losing hours in the day when they sleep eight hours a night, but in the long run, full nights of sleep will make your future that much brighter!

It is easy to neglect your body and its health, but it is just as easy to take care of your body! Just follow these tips, and you will find that your body is on its way to health!

Five Simple Tips For Keeping Your Weight Under Control

A lot of people have tried numerous diets. One of the reasons why people have tried so many different diets is because they haven’t found one that works! After all, if there was a single, miracle diet plan that actually worked the way diet plans are supposed to, all other diet plans would disappear, right?

Well, not exactly. A lot of these diet plans fail for certain people specifically because they have a hard time staying committed to the plan they have chosen. And they are not staying committed because, quite frankly, it is difficult to work a diet into your daily routine. Perhaps you want to eat healthy, perhaps you want to live a healthy lifestyle, but perhaps your schedule does not make this easy. If this is the case for you, here are five easy ways to help keep your weight under control.

1) Always eat breakfast: There is a reason why they call breakfast “the most important meal of the day.” When you eat breakfast at the start of the day, it kicks off your metabolism. Even something simple and easy for breakfast – fruit or yogurt or toast – can make a big difference.

2) Work your exercise in somewhere: A lot of people do not exercise at all, because they “do not have time.” But really, there are a lot of times during the day when you can squeeze in some exercise – maybe you can take the stairs at work, or go for a walk on a nice day; maybe you can do some pushups before you hop in the shower; whatever the case, exercise when you can.

Change your eating habits: A lot of people eat fast food for half their meals, and their excuse is, “I don’t have time to make healthy meals.” But in fact, many fast food places now allow you to order a salad instead of fries! Make small, healthy substitutions, and you will see a big difference.

4) Add fruits and vegetables: Many fruit and vegetable options are far less expensive than any fast food you could buy. And these foods are easy to bring with you in the car, or to work, or to school. As you keep fruit around, you will begin to see a difference.

5) Add some supplements: A lot of different supplements provide you with the vitamins and minerals you need for the day. These supplements will make your body feel good and healthy.

It might seem difficult to keep your body healthy and your weight under control, but it becomes a lot easier when you break it down into these smaller pieces.

Healthy Alternatives To Your Favorite Junk Food

It can be difficult to eat healthy sometimes, especially when there are certain food that you absolutely love eating all the time! But for anyone trying to improve the health of their lifestyle, one of the best ways for them to do this is to improve the foods they eat. And when it comes to cutting out that junk food, you can actually find that there are a lot of great alternatives.

In the mornings, a lot of people start the day off the wrong way by eating doughnuts, pastries, or some other form of sugar-filled junk food. Of course, it is best to start your day off with an apple or with a couple eggs, but there are other options as well! For instance, if you want a tasty bread treat that still is nutritious, try replacing the pastry with a bagel or with a fruit-filled muffin.

Around mid-morning, when people go to grab a snack, is the next time of day when people often eat something that is bad for their body. Rather than hitting the vending machine for chips or some candy, however, you should consider bringing something with you. A few things that are great to bring with you are fruit bars, granola bars, and protein bars; all three are delicious and sweet, and area also healthy!

image

There are a couple different options to try for the person who usually enjoys having dessert after their evening meal. Firstly, you can replace your dessert with healthier alternatives, such as sweet, healthy treats like watermelon, strawberries, or a bowl of mixed berries. Or, if your sweet tooth requires you to indulge every once in a while, cut in half the number of nights on which you will eat dessert each week!

When you start to eat healthy, you will discover that your body is able to create more energy and strength than you realized it was capable of. And not only that, but your body will feel and look a lot better in the long run, and you will even be less susceptible to disease!
